Based on the 1971 Stanford University simulation study of the psychology of imprisonment (otherwise know as the Stanford Prison Experiment), DAS EXPERIMENT is an intense psychodrama about a group of ordinary men who volunteer to take place in a paid two-week study on the mental effects of prison life. Following a series of intellectual and physical examinations, the men are separated into two groups--eight guards and twelve prisoners--and locked into a working prison, fully loaded with cameras to capture their every move. One of the prisoners, an undercover reporter named Tarek (Moritz Leibtrau of RUN LOLA RUN), uses every opportunity to provoke the guards and collect quotes for his story, but he consistently pushes the envelope too far. As egos are bruised and machismo is belittled, the guards resort to sadistic torture techniques while the prisoners formulate an escape scheme that is laden with vengeance. The experiment inevitably goes awry (even the moderators have utterly lost control) leading to a powerful climatic battle between good and evil. Director Oliver Hirschbiegel keeps the film moving at a fast clip, effortlessly switching from the film to the prison cameras and even to a pair of 007-esque spy glasses worn by Tarek to reveal different angles of observation and offer the viewer a voyeuristic experience. DAS EXPERIMENT is an extreme thriller steeped in ultra-violence, murder, and suspense. [More]

Reviews for The Experiment
The movie's central premise -- is well supported in a film whose strength is in its close-ups on characters and its ability to put the viewer in the cell with them.
Probably it's more action film than anything else, but has enough insight to be of interest to serious filmgoers.
What impressed me is how effective the movie was, even though the outcome is a foregone conclusion.
An R-rated version of Survivor, Big Brother or any number of reality-TV shows that present voyeurism as entertainment and exploitation as insight.
Das Experiment may make an obvious point, but it's still a relevant one.
In the end, it looks as if this experiment proves only one thing: People forced to play guards and prisoners tend to end up imitating bad prison movies.
Even when playing a bad-boy archetype, Bleibtreu is an enormously charismatic actor who grabs the audience and runs with it.
It is in the camera details rather than the grand design that Das Experiment excels.
As it goes into the final turn and is headed for home, it mysteriously runs right off the rails, and Hirschbiegel seems happy to let the whole thing spin wildly out of control.
Rigid, airless, and browbeatingly repetitive, Das Experiment is an overly didactic piece of thesis hectoring.
The cat-and-mouse game proceeds along conventional lines; the plot is full of holes.
It's empty calories trying to trumpet its bogus nutritional value, and the strain for social importance undermines the picture.
This deftly crafted film provokes the kind of creeping horror that Lord of the Flies memorably nailed.
A keen, gripping psychodrama with unsettling real-life underpinnings.
