Director Sylvain White adapts the Vertigo comic about a team of mercenaries who wage war on the CIA after they're double-crossed in the field and left to die. Clay (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Jensen (Chris Evans), Roque (Idris Elba), Pooch (Columbus Short), and Cougar (Óscar Jaenada) were on a black-ops mission in the Bolivian jungle when rogue CIA agent Max (Jason Patric) hung them out to dry. It isn't half bad: unmemorable but fast and flashy, and less bloated than the kind of action number that keeps John Travolta in Lear jets.

As an action fix to hold you before the summer explosions start, you could do worse than The Losers. It's no more than an efficient time-killer.

"The Losers" was made with one purpose in mind, to simply entertain, and while it may not be a great movie of substance, it certainly fulfills its purpose oh so very well.

The bad in The Losers isn't particularly memorable and the good is, which is a pretty big saving grace. There is a very good idea for an action movie in there, but just one and no one seems to know what to do once it's exhausted.

Everything about the weaponry on screen and the moviemaking technology employed behind it screams ultra-modern, but at its core is a loopy, loud wham-bam dose of old-fashioned thrills and giggles.

This comic-book knockoff of The A-Team...is a lot easier to enjoy than Fox's sanctioned remake of The A-Team. Perhaps that's because Sylvain White's The Losers is self-aware of its schlock value...[Blu-ray]

Raucous and colourful, this comical action flick should be great fun, but a lack of plot or character development keep it from coming together. And it's not actually that funny or exciting.

Only the strangely coy approach to violence (deaths are nearly all offscreen), leaves an odd aftertaste, but not enough to taint the big dumb fun.

It's junk -- and remarkably soporific when people aren't fighting or shooting each other -- but the action sequences are stylishly directed by Sylvain White. you'll be hearing more of him.

Audience Reviews for The Losers

Shallow but highly entertaining action flick that is fully aware of its own ridiculousness and has fun with it, personified in Chris Evan's character. Whenever there is too much slow motion or cool guys walking away from explosions the film makes you groan, but then there is always a fun scene to make up for it. Guilty pleasure entertainment, but entertainment none the less.

This loosely-based DC Comic has stylized action that's a good vibe throughout the film, but falters on several occasions. The Losers' fast-paced tempo doesn't allow the audience to fully grasp the background of each character. The overall simplification and predictability of the script also is a let-down with an uninspiring and somewhat nixed-chemistry amongst characters, although it does have a decent twist to the story. Overall, the film is an excitement that you'd only want experience once and only once. 2.5/5

A special ops team is betrayed and left for dead by a corrupt CIA operative, so they join forces with a mysterious terrorist to avenge themselves and clear their name. The Losers is a comic strip action film featuring the old "mercs with conscience" premise that will never win any awards for originality, but it is done with enough charm and tongue in cheek humour to make for an enjoyably mindless popcorn movie that is a pleasant enough way to wile away an hour and a half. The cast are all likeable and have decent chemistry, particularly Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Hannibal-alike and the action sequences are suitably explosive and fun. Playing out a little like a military version of the Ocean's films it doesn't have the tasteless violence and testosterone of the similar The Expendables and despite some sketchy CGI and occasionally juvenile humour it actually makes a far better A-Team film than The A-Team did. Forgettable but fun.
