Movie Info

After a long absence abroad, young Asian American woman Raffi Tang (Francoise Yip) is called home when her estranged mother is murdered. She becomes increasingly drawn into a web of deception and incompetence while at the same time dealing with her own grief. Equal parts noir thriller and dysfunctional family drama, Doris Yeung's bold debut feature is a sobering tale of the pursuit of the American Dream. -- (C) Official Site

Motherland doesn't fully succeed on any of its levels. But Doris Yeung's subtle and intelligent debut feature contains enough interesting elements to mark the filmmaker as someone to watch.

Yeung tries to mix a whodunit with a story of explosive family dynamics, but the effort succumbs to a weak script and a one-note lead performance.

Despite its ambitious combination of murder mystery and cautionary immigration tale, Motherland doesn't quite hold together, lacking both the fuel to reach a rolling, procedural boil and the intimacy to simmer with emotion.

Besides its requisite thrills, the Asian-American experience has rarely been better captured than in this taut, sensitively drawn murder mystery.

Francoise Yip is stunning and steel-willed as a take charge, not taking no for an answer, tough-talking sleuth. While subverting any vestiges of the meek China Doll mystique, in this too true for comfort crime thriller.

Audience Reviews for Motherland

An Asian American crime story; I saw this with a couple of German guys in the top floor "culture space" of a gay bar in Beijing. Definitely a student film, but also undeniably creepy. Imagine if Maxine Hong Kingston wrote John Grisham's "The Firm." Even creepier, the director emerged at the end and told us that the script is autobiographical -- her mother really was murdered!
