The rackets and scams it exposes are all real, the result of extensive research. It's a gripping thriller with good guys and bad guys, but everyone in it is a victim, including Rick Carver. Bahrani's achievement in this film is breathtaking.

99 Homes really belongs to Shannon, offering a portrait of a man who has long since stopped asking about the ethical implications of his actions and, only after a few drinks, hints that he laments having to wear a concealed weapon.

Yet another $1.4M (very small) grossing movie that I thought was fantastic and deserved a much larger reward for the tremendous effort and result. It's also, for me, the second movie in a row where I agree much more with the Tomatometer than the Popcornmeter. All the small run theaters in my city disappeared about... 15 years or so ago. What happened?

This movie was a very dark look at the real estate industry. It was eye opening and was really impactful. This was a movie that kept my attention throughout, but also made me wonder if situations like what was pictured exist. It was just heartbreaking to see families being vacated from their homes and some of the ways that people were using that for profit.

Should be required watching for anyone considering a glamorous career in real estate. There will be even more of these scenes unwinding in overbought blue state cities being abandoned by investors and workers.
