David Fincher's feature debut, ALIEN 3, picks up almost directly after the events in ALIENS, finding Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) frozen in suspended animation as her ship crashes on Fiorina 161, a prison planet. When awakened by the prison's staff, she discovers that she is the sole survivor of her crew. Trapped on a barren planet with convicts and no weapons of any kind, Ripley soon realizes that an alien was also on the ship and has survived. As the savage creature begins to massacre inmates, Ripley bands together with the remaining prisoners and attempts to destroy it by wits alone. Filmed at a time when big guns and high technology dominated the screen, ALIEN 3 deserves commendation for its unique premise--battling a vicious alien creature with no weapons and almost no resources whatsoever. This scenario makes for an unusual and intriguing science fiction thriller that is also notable for Fincher's bleak industrial visuals; the film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Reviews for Alien 3
The visual imagery and gloomy tone are the only two reasons to see this disappointing film which is burdened with pretentious religious symplism. Nonethless, in his feature debut David Fincher shows a lot of promise for better things to come.
Tournure inattendue trop souvent sous-estimée, Alien³ pourrait bien être en fait la suite la plus accomplie d’une saga incontournable.
Fox's DVD restoration/mea culpa of Fincher's original edit is cause for celebration. The studio cut seemed glibly nihilistic --this time when she jumps, it means something.
The advertisements promise '3 times the suspense. 3 times the danger. 3 times the terror.' The only thing Alien3 has triple of is the word 'f--k.'
Flashy, flawed sequel that doesn't deliver the chills of the first or the thrills of the second
Manages to get the job done if you temper your expectation to a modest level.
Filled with scares. Sigourney Weaver is winning once again as a tough woman warrior.
All the groundwork laid by Scott and Cameron in the first two films is tossed right out the window by this nihilistic script. Only watchable thanks to Fincher's directing.
