American Sniper (2015)

Critic Consensus: Powered by Clint Eastwood's sure-handed direction and a gripping central performance from Bradley Cooper, American Sniper delivers a tense, vivid tribute to its real-life subject.

Movie Info

From director Clint Eastwood comes "American Sniper," starring Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history. But there was much more to this true American hero than his skill with a rifle. U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname "Legend." However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, becoming emblematic of the SEAL creed to "leave no man behind." But upon returning home, Chris finds that it is the war he can't leave behind. (C) Warner Brosmore

Critic Reviews for American Sniper

All Critics (253) | Top Critics (47)

American Sniper has a perspective that's recognizable from the classic Westerns Eastwood has long been associated with, both as an actor and a director. It's an existential critique of violent machismo that doubles as a celebration of violence.

Kyle killed two men, as a civilian, with his massive Colt .44 Magnum. That's a "Dirty Harry" gun. Who directed "American Sniper"? Dirty Harry did. That's terribly ironic.

Cooper excels in the central role while Eastwood succeeds in the difficult task of delivering a war movie that focuses more on the personal sacrifice made by soldiers than it does on politics. It's all the better for it.

Sunday Independent (Ireland)

Well made and briskly edited, American Sniper is a decent and very watchable action film. But it appears to have absolutely nothing to say about the politics behind all the soldiering.

Cooper is very good in the film, bulking up to built fat status, mostly nailing Kyle's southern lilt, and selling the inner turmoil of a family left behind.

You hardly recognize Cooper, with a muscular physique, beard and kind of a swagger.

Audience Reviews for American Sniper

Though understandably accused of being jingoistic and racist - even if it makes a (dishonest, yes) distinction between Iraqi civilians and terrorists -, this is an extremely tense (and very well edited) war movie and a nuanced character study with Cooper in an intense performance.

Well-directed and at times inspiring, "American Sniper" is a strange blend of Jingoism and a criticism of the violence inflicted on the American side of the Iraqi war. Unfortunately, this lop-sided approach dulls the film's broader message about the effects of war on humanity. Great acting by Cooper and exciting action sequences make the film worth seeing even if the film is a bit overlong.

Succeeds largely on the strength of Bradley Cooper's great performance and less on the true life story that inspired it. Despite being a well told story, this is a theme we have seen plenty of times before on film. For me, it lessened the impact of it a little bit as I was reminded of better films like "The Hurt Locker", but all in all this is a story worth telling. The action is intense, well shot, and keeps you on the edge of your seat at times. It does get a little repetitive with him taking so many tours trying to find the same guy, but this is a small complaint. Otherwise, this is a film worth watching.
