The Mayan kingdom is at the height of its opulence and power but the foundations of the empire are beginning to crumble. The leaders believe they must build more temples and sacrifice more people or their crops and citizens will die. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a peaceful hunter in a remote tribe, is captured along with his entire village in a raid. He is scheduled for a ritual sacrifice until he makes a daring escape and tries to make it back to his pregnant wife and son.

It's escapism - the world would be a lot safer if good and evil were so clearly defined - and it's something that Mel Gibson proves (once again) that he does very, very well in Apocalypto.

Gibson makes people nervous in part because he takes the obscene fascination with violence ... to such absurd heights that the entire phenomenon threatens to become visible and called into question.

Great story with likable and hatable characters. It's a little longer that I'd prefer, but no obvious scenes to cut. Very little cgi and that makes it better . Typical Gibson. Violence and gore, but nothing compared to todays typical horror film. I like Braveheart and The Patriot better, but this film is solid and likely my third favorite of his films.

Brilliant. Criticized for various reasons but none holds water imo. Great story, very well written and excellent directing by Mel Gibson. Some of the most convincing acting I've ever seen in my life, the whole cast just excels in character. Disturbing, cruel, gritty, captivating, lots of action and drama, dilemma, intrigue and creates a tangible ambiance of how it must have been. Suspenseful and visually stunning

The fact that this isn’t at least a 90% Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% Popcorn meter rated movie is just ridiculous. This is a phenomenal movie IMO one of the 50 greatest movies ever made. These ratings really make me question to even look at others ratings for any type of a reference point ever again. Watch this movie if you’re a fan of great action and beautiful shot scenes.
