Jay W @RT52162311 Apr 6 This movie makes for an interesting time capsule of 1994. There are a lot of entertaining cameos from real life NBA stars, college athletes and coaches. You can look at the conflict of "paying college athletes" as being dated, because now some college players make millions, or look at it as being more important now than ever. But the concept of: "when do you sell out your moral code?" remains timeless. Sadly, the movie just doesn't completely stick the landing. The emotional beats of the characters feel rushed. Too much time is spent on the recruiting of the characters and not enough time on getting to know the characters. The introduction of the coach as a yelling hot head, does not match with what we see of his coaching tactics throughout the film. No it doesnt clearly say why but if you focus on other aspects, you'll find your answer. In the movie they cover a scene where they go over point shaving and gambling.. isn't that our answer. This movie was enjoyable because it highlights the dark side of influence over sports. Paying players to perform in a certain way. Taking the purity away from the game. It was cool to see Larry Bird, Shaquille O'Neal, and Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway on screen as a added bonus. See more Alex A @RT11675726 03/10/2025 Not a bad movie but the only problem was understanding the moral dilemma of the hero.i mean what's wrong if some poor people got some money a house and a better life for their son to play basketball and earn a degree.ok in a way I understand the ethics involved but practically.. the "sponsor" was the corrupt bad guy giving gifts expecting basketball wins,is this so wrong? I mean in pro ball a bonus is perfectly legal. See more Jarrod R @RT27243469 02/09/2025 I have mixed feelings about Blue Chips, since in the summer of 1993, I auditioned to be part of the fictional pep band for the Western University basketball team and got the part along with friends from the Indiana University pep band. The audition process was a ton of fun, albeit stressful, and while it was all done in Indianapolis, it did provide a little glimpse into the "process" of getting a movie made. And then, a week before shooting, they got rid of all of us and went with a high school group up where they would be shooting some of those scenes. That's show biz, baby. Blue Chips was certainly of the moment as it had a collection of some of the biggest names from the college and pro basketball world, as well as cameos from legendary college coaches like Bobby Knight and Rick Pitino. On top of that, this one had a DEEP bench (pun intended?) with Nick Nolte, Mary McDonnell, J.T. Walsh, Ed O'Neill, and Alfre Woodard with solid roles. All told, an interesting concept - what would you be willing to do to win? - should have been a slam dunk, but it felt like it pulled some punches and just skidded across the surface without the true emotional impact.
