Disney's first 3D animation, made under new head John Lasseter, is a likeable, dynamic and seductively characterised family entertainment.

That it falls short of Pixar's lofty heights doesn't mean the attempt isn't worthwhile; indeed, Bolt is the most entertaining and well-crafted Disney Animation movie in years.

The 3-D process is an enhancement, even though it's used with little verve or ingenuity. But the movie's terms are severely limited too.

Belief may be in question for much of the movie -- only for the perturbed pooch -- but fortunately, enjoyment is never a problem.

Although it doesn't reach the heights of Finding Nemo or The Incredibles, it's a masterpiece compared with Disney's 2002 Treasure Island.

Restores some faith that there are some creative minds left in animated films that Pixar hasn't added to its talent pool.

It's sophisticated look is rich with details that are easy to take for granted, but which add immeasurably to the texture and dimension of the scenes.

The latest generation of animated flicks is a sort of latter-day vaudeville revue. Kiddies who take Bolt to heart may conclude not only that dogs really do have superpowers, but also that everybody's in showbiz.

Wait... an all-star voice cast for a computer-animated story we've never heard of before, and it's watchable, too?

Are your kids ready for an existential movie? Turns out they are: Disney's CGI-animated action comedy Bolt is, at its core, a story of one individual's discovery that his sense of reality...has been seriously skewed. [Blu-ray]

The jokes aren't a match for Pixar's best, and there's too much sentimentality (as if Lasseter were determined to keep Disney's cartoons just that little bit less cool than Pixar's), but this is still an above-average children's film.

Audience Reviews for Bolt

I absolutely adored Bolt. It's one of the few animated features I've seen lately that can actually boast the cliched line 'A film the whole family can enjoy'. It's not particularly predictable either, which is often the flaw of these films. The animation, story, script, voice talent and physical comedy are all very well done. It is one of the few really touching animated films out there, in fact only Toy Story 3 and Up have made me well up before this. I thoroughly love it, I'm perplexed as to why it isn't that popular!?

Well I'm still yet to see an animated film that can topple the mighty 'Toy Story', 'TS' still sits on its throne with the number one spot. But Bolt is a nice film, very sweet, very nice, a touch of emotion and you have a good solid performance.

The story is as usual pretty unoriginal but it still works well, it has a touch of 'Lassie' in there and 'Homeward Bound' with the cross country trek to find the owner but this does give it a soft touch that can pull at the heart strings in places.
It starts off kinda weak, your not too such what the films tag is or where the plot is going but it soon starts to pick up when Bolt reaches NY.
It looks great with some very detailed fur action going on and brilliant movement copying with other animals such as the pigeons. The funniest parts tend to be with the funniest character...that being 'Rhino the hamster', an almost Jack Black type rodent haha not an overdose of humour in the film but most comes from Rhino.

Solid film for all but still cant compete with the mighty 'Toy Story' trilogy.

A fun and cute movie. Although this movie follows a very familiar formula, it's a lot of fun and feels fresh because of the quirky and live characters. The animation is great. An awesome movie for the kids but can keep the adults entertained as well.
