Movie Info

Captain Phillips is director Paul Greengrass's multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award (R) winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart,

Greengrass and screenwriter Billy Ray put us on the side of Phillips, his crew, the American negotiators, the Navy, and the SEALS. But we understand the greater tragedy of Muse and the Somalis' lives.

As cinema it plays a lot like a knockoff of "Zero Dark Thirty," without the same ambition and scale and with dramatically lower stakes.

The filmmakers are as interested in the human element as they are in the true events they're recounting. It's too bad that they couldn't have made their real-life bad guys as multi-dimensional as their hero.

A riveting picture, but one that seems like a safe choice for Greengrass, presented in a way that's familiar to those already intimate with his work.

In another director's hands, this script might have come across as didactic. ... But Ray's words play effective counterpoint to Greengrass' visceral approach.

It works too hard to keep matters on an even, we're-all-more-alike-than-different keel, which is just one part of its chief problem of forcefully conveying information and intent.

The white-knuckled immediacy Greengrass delivers to every scene is transportive, dropping you like a passenger, gagged and bound, into this extremely volatile situation. The fear, panic and emotional pain every character endures is utterly tangible.

Audience Reviews for Captain Phillips

From it's great pacing to it's astonishing cast, "Captain Phillips" is the type of film that leaves nothing left to explain about this story. Tom Hanks gives one of the best performances of his entire career here and the newcomers (the pirates) are all fantastic and perfectly casted. This film is one of the more realistic films I have seen all year, because everything feels real when it needs to and the emotion is just jumping off the screen and making your heart race until it's final moments, which will leave you in tears. The shaky cam in this film does not bother me too much, since it is a Paul Greengrass feature and that is what he is best known for, and really the only thing that I had any issues with was the trailers giving away a bit too much of the film. Overall, it is one of the most impressive and well-executed films of 2013! Coming into Oscar season, it definitely deserves some nods.

A rare case in which the movie is better than the book, though Phillips's take on his capture by the Somali pirates was in itself some pretty riveting stuff. Paul Greengrass, who should have won the Oscar for United 93, deftly directs the best drama of this year so far while Tom Hanks rediscovers his acting mojo. Super intense and very well acted. The cinematography and SFX added greatly to the whole experience. (10-2-13)
