I think I chuckled about three times ...

The film employs and immediately squanders the talents of legitimate comedy all-stars Amy Ryan, Danny McBride, Jemaine Clement and Will Forte.

Even with the likes of Amy Ryan and Will Forte providing capable backup, it all grows ancient, fast.

There is a redemptive message in Verdean's eventual downfall but it's mostly lost in a storyline that tries way too hard to be outlandish.

There is an absence of meanness in the Hesses' comic worldview that makes their films almost impossible to dislike.

Hess' eccentric characters are neither likable enough to root for nor ridiculous enough to earn big laughs.

Audience Reviews for Don Verdean

This film could have used some more focused energy and flow in the second half, but overall I enjoyed it, and had some good laughs. The cast overall weren't used to their full potential, but were great nonetheless. Jemaine Clement was absolutely hilarious. I don't think he's capable of not being funny. He was definitely the source of most of the humor in this film. I'm a huge fan of Danny McBride, I just wish he got to shine a little more in this film. That's the only problem really. It seemed muffled. I also am personally a fan of religious satire, and I find it interesting that the Hess duo made this film, being members of the Mormon church. Especially the part with the holy grail being guarded by native Americans in Utah. Kind of reminiscent of the origins of the Mormon doctrine. Indirectly poking fun at their own church? Anyway, if you're a fan of Hess films, you'll probably enjoy it.

I was sadly disappointed in this religious satire starring one of my favorite actors, Sam Rockwell. I felt especially bad for great talents Amy Ryan and Jemaine Clement. The laughs are just not there enough for such great talent. The makers of 'Napoleon Dynamite' might have reached their peak with that first movie.

There's no denying the cast has talent but they deserve more than this flat script. Clement and Forte do well with what they're given but it's only due to their own expertise.
