A film about what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button -- and it played the situation for laughs. U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely insane, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He thinks that the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people.

Critics Consensus

Stanley Kubrick's brilliant Cold War satire remains as funny and razor-sharp today as it was in 1964.

Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic Oct 16, 2026
Dr. Strangelove is not eminent merely because of the flatness of surrounding movie country: it is a fine achievement; a fiery laugh at those humans down there, parochially self-righteous and self-condemned. Go to Full Review
Tom Milne Sight & Sound Oct 16, 2026
A film which maintains the courage of its convictions to the bitter end is rare enough; even rarer is one which pursues its course with such relentless logic. Go to Full Review

Even though I didn't like the warped humor provoked by the behavior of the men of our country who are responsible for keeping the peace, I can't take Kubrick's brilliant work in other commitments away from him. Go to Full Review

Credit Stanley Kubrick with turning out one of the funniest comedies in years from the unlikeliest of material. Go to Full Review

As a whole, Dr. Strangelove is a beautifully conceived and executed film -- one of the best to be produced in this country in the last twenty years. Go to Full Review

The madness Mr. Kubrick is conjuring with such drollery may be cartoon and caricature, but a lot of truth clings to it, too. Around every antic rumbles an anxiety. Go to Full Review

Robert A Nov 30, 2025 A couple of my favorite acting performances ever. Plot is still relevant, especially the mine shaft gap dialogue. Great director. See more Joshua R Sep 6, 2025 Classic Cold War comedy See more Dom Sep 4, 2025 i liked the comedy and i get it was a satire but the movie just good See more Griffin B @RT04059877 1 day ago Executed amazingly. Great absurdist humor mixed with dread. See more Eduardo R @Dudi0310 6 days ago Dr. Strangelove is a true masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick. The film works brilliantly by balancing the terrifying threat of nuclear war with an incisive satire on political relations and the absurdity of decision-making during times of crisis. High tension and dark humor go hand in hand from start to finish. The standout feature is the genius of Peter Sellers, who delivers a flawless chameleon-like performance by playing three entirely distinct roles, the sensible Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, the timid President Merkin Muffley, and the eccentric, unsettling Dr. Strangelove. This comedic versatility elevates the story's absurdity to a whole new level. All of this is framed by an iconic production design, with the legendary War Room setting the perfect stage to expose Cold War geopolitical paranoia and military bureaucracy. A brilliant classic that remains hauntingly relevant today. See more James O @WhoDatBoxOffice Sep 30, 2026 Even if this movie didn't have the absolutely stacked cast and hilarious dialogue, the story alone would get you hooked. Dr. Strangelove stays as my favorite movie of all time for all the best reasons. See more Read all reviews
