Movie Info

Two brothers separated during their youth come together as adults in this sentimental drama. In the flashback format, the story tells of the separation when their parents die. One boy goes to live with a wealthy family and becomes an idealistic loafer. The other boy finds work at a newspaper and works his way up to becoming a journalist. They meet after many years one day in Florence. When the reporter is called away to Rome on assignment, he returns to find his brother near death. He brings his brother to the hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Based on the novel by Vasco Pratolinni, the screenplay was faithfully rendered by director Valerio Zurlini and reflected the immense respect he had for the author. The film remained extremely accurate to the original text. Marcello Mastroianni and Jacques Perrin star as the two long lost brothers. This film appeared at the Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim in 1962.more

What saves it from morbidity is Marcello Mastroianni's fine sensitive performance.
