In the early 1950s, Eddie Mannix is busy at work trying to solve all the problems of the actors and filmmakers at Capitol Pictures. His latest assignments involve a disgruntled director, a singing cowboy, a beautiful swimmer and a handsome dancer. As if all this wasn't enough, Mannix faces his biggest challenge when Baird Whitlock gets kidnapped while in costume for the swords-and-sandals epic "Hail, Caesar!" If the studio doesn't pay $100,000, it's the end of the line for the movie star.

The Coen’s prowessness for balance is also important to note here, as it’s never overtly satirical. It’s jabs toward Hollywood are limited and the balance of recognizing the chaos but also giving us grounded humanity results in the film being playful...

I guess I was expecting a bit more from this. Being a fan of The Big Lebowski I kind of figured that this movie would definitely have some oddness surrounding it. There were definitely some very humourous parts of the movie inlcuding Channing Tatum's submarine scene near the end of the movie. This movie definitely had its moments but for me it just wasn't sustainably funny.

So many funny scenes, so many fine actors, and so much affection for old Hollywood. The Channing Tatum sailor number was great, almost enough to make you think he was giving Gene Kelly a run for his money. Given our deep interest in the film industry, it was especially fun to see the 1950s Hollywood studio re-imagined by the Coen brothers.

Lead by a star studded cast. Eddie who is in charge of keeping the talent happy and out of trouble finds himself in a pickle when Baird is kidnapped. Other characters include a singing cowboy, a esther williams type actress and burt who is a Gene Kelly wannabe. Burt played by Channing Tatum is my favorite character. His performance of no Dames is funny and amazing. This movie is filled with good performances and George Clooneys scene with josh brolin toward the end had me in 😭 lol. Tim Treakle

The first time I watched this I was not paying close attention but enjoyed it. I realized it is fast moving and subtle so the next time I payed close attention and liked it even better. Wish I had seen it in a theater because I suspect that would have made it a five star movie for me. It doesn’t really depict a time, more like a memory of films to TV during the 60’s. The analog broadcast Netflix era.
