Synopsis: Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman), head of the Open Spaces Coalition, has been experiencing an alarming series of coincidences the meaning of which escapes him. With the help of two Existential... Albert Markovski (Jason Schwartzman), head of the Open Spaces Coalition, has been experiencing an alarming series of coincidences the meaning of which escapes him. With the help of two Existential Detectives, Bernard and Vivian Jaffe (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin), Albert examines his life, his relationships, and his conflict with Brad Stand (Jude Law), an executive climbing the corporate ladder at Huckabees, a popular chain of retail superstores. When Brad also hires the detectives, they dig deep into his seemingly perfect life and his relationship with his spokesmodel girlfriend, the voice of Huckabees, Dawn Campbell (Naomi Watts). Albert pairs up with rebel firefighter Tommy Corn (Mark Wahlberg) to take matters into their own hands under the guidance of the Jaffes’ nemesis, the French radical Caterine Vauban (Isabelle Huppert). This existential comedy is directed and co-written by David O. Russell, whose first film, SPANKING THE MONKEY, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Sundance Audience Award in 1994. It also was named Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards. His second film was the acclaimed comedy, FLIRTING WITH DIASTER. Russell’s THREE KINGS came out in 1999 and appeared in over 100 critic’s top ten lists and won the Boston Film Critic’s Association’s Best Film of the Year. The film marks co-writer Jeff Baena’s first feature film screenplay put into production. I ♥ HUCKABEES features an ensemble cast that includes two-time Academy Award®-winner Dustin Hoffman (RAIN MAN, KRAMER VS. KRAMER), Isabelle Huppert (LA DENTELLIÈRE, 8 FEMMES), Oscar® nominee Jude Law (THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, ROAD TO PERDITION), Jason Schwartzman (RUSHMORE, SPUN), Oscar nominee Lily Tomlin (NASHVILLE, SHORT CUTS), Mark Wahlberg (THE ITALIAN JOB, THREE KINGS) and Naomi Watts (THE RING, MULHOLLAND DRIVE). Producers on the film are Oscar-nominated Scott Rudin (THE HOURS, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS), Gregory Goodman (8 MILE, THREE KINGS) and David O. Russell, with Michael Kuhn (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, WILD AT HEART) as executive producer. The director of photography is Peter Deming (MULHOLLAND DR., FROM HELL) and the production designer is KK Barrett (LOST IN THE TRANSLATION, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH). -- © Fox Searchlight [More]

So willfully, smugly eccentric that it grows tiresome rather quickly.

Adventurous, challenging and filled with small moments of delight. Unfortunately, it's also self-indulgent, repetitious and the sort of movie you wish was great but isn't.

You have to give everyone involved credit for mounting a joke that, if not of Dadaist proportions, should prove pretty funny to everyone except the rubes who wander in expecting to see something they can comprehend.

In a way, the movie is about everything and nothing, but its real problem has less to do with its philosophical ambition than with its scattered, half-digested musings.

It is difficult for me to describe how sweet and buoyant I found the film, despite its seemingly excessive stylization.

Along with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it's the most playful, intelligent and original comedy of the year.

An ambitious but disjointed spoof of New Age quirks and quacks that attempts to simultaneously put down and lift up. But, despite the A-list ensemble, it accomplishes neither.

There's ambition here, as well as a shaggy brilliance and a rare willingness on the part of a director to work out his questions in front of us, on film.

Theirs is too painfully forced, from the movie's thin premise to its ideas about what's funny: Hoffman in a Beatles wig?

With razor-sharp performances, zingy one-liners, broad slapstick humor and a message of sorts, there's enough to distract the viewer from becoming hopelessly lost in the lint-filled chaos that is the umbilicus.

It's like a screwball comedy written by the existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre.

The movie is like an infernal machine that consumes all of the energy it generates, saving the last watt of current to turn itself off. It functions perfectly within its constraints, but it leaves the viewer out of the loop.

The trick of David O. Russell's splattery, overstuffed, and pretty wonderful Philosophy 101 farce is that it's also one of the sanest movies in ages.

Simultaneously scattered and thought-provoking, as if writer/director David O. Russell gathered up all his loose ideas and decided to pack them tightly into one movie.

It's filled with characters who, desperate to feel deep, want answers to life's big questions. And watching it, you, also desperate to feel deep, will want answers to big questions like, 'What's this all about?'
