By no means a biography or even a particularly revealing snapshot of Dmitri Shostakovich %u2013 despite excerpts from his own letters %u2013 this doco will be of interest only to his fans and to music colleges, museums and archivists
Despite its cold war orientation, a valuable introduction to one of the last century's great composers filled with stunning images of a bygone era.
Overall effect ranges from richly amusing (Shostakovich is decidedly less than nostalgic as he recalls providing musical accompaniment for silent movies) to sociopolitically astute.
