Reviews for The Journey of Dimitri Shostakovich
Despite its cold war orientation, a valuable introduction to one of the last century's great composers filled with stunning images of a bygone era.
Overall effect ranges from richly amusing (Shostakovich is decidedly less than nostalgic as he recalls providing musical accompaniment for silent movies) to sociopolitically astute.
A documentary grab bag of film clips, diary readings and desultory narration, A Journey of Dmitry Shostakovich peeks at the politics of this controversial composer.
Even the casual viewer can see the marks a troubled life left on Shostakovich in the juxtaposition of a vigorous, owlish young pianist performing in the 1930s and the exhausted old man glumly shaking hands and making speeches four decades later.
The impressionistic parade of footage [the filmmakers] present is a fascinating spectacle in its own right.
