Vividly illustrates how the young Louis used dance to project his image to the world and strengthen his hold on power during a turbulent time for the kingdom. Go to Full Review

The visuals are overpowering; as for the drama, it might help if you are a Francophile . . . or a costume freak. But then don't most of us fall into one of these categories? Go to Full Review

10/04/2009 A beautiful work that does not resort to cliches or commercialization to bring in viewers. Rarely do you see a movie about musicians, or any artist for that matter, so well done and without flaws. Le Roi Danse is officially my new favorite film! See more 07/31/2009 This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and successful historic dramas since Barry Lyndon. The music score is absolutely off the charts. The relationship between Jean Baptiste Lully (along with Rameau, THE greatest composer of the period) and Louis the Fourteenth is probed in exquisite depth. The costuming and attention to detail is worthy of anything the British have done in "genre" epics. I highly recommend this film to those "esthetes" that appreciate a well-made film about a historic subject. "Três elegant"!!!!! See more 02/12/2005 This film is one which conveys a splendor not seen out-side of European films. Attention to every aspect of this production has made this a film to be watched & thouroughly enjoyed by those who work in the industry. The audio is rich enough to convey the very feel of the fabric worn by the actors. A rich essence which permeates through like the aroma of coffee perculating through a house in the morning. Articulating the visual to follow this almost aromatic sound leaves the brain open to a magnificence worthy of King Louis XIV. You may start watching this film, by the end you are consuming it's every detail hungry for more until you are quite literally told this film is over. See more 04/17/2004 Watched this French/German/Belgian film (there was nothing else on telly) and found it sort of interesting. Mostly about Louis XIV and his relationship with dance, and with his musician Lully. I give it 6.6, probably only worth watching if you like historical French films with lots of wigs, dancing and baroque music. Though I did like how Moliere was given a look-in and a lot of time as the King's favorite writer...how scandalous he was! Probably should delete last journal entry, but won't, so as to serve a timely reminder to myself never to be drunk and writing things at the same time. Works for some, but not really for me. Sorry all! See more Read all reviews
