Critics Consensus

The Last Airbender squanders its popular source material with incomprehensible plotting, horrible acting, and detached joyless direction.

A quite breathtakingly inept hodge-podge of vapid spirituality, playground chopsocky and visual effects that take 3D to an entirely new level: Zero-D. Go to Full Review

This empty, misfired epic from M. Night Shyamalan is boring and strengthens the claim that he is the worst director working in mainstream cinema today. Go to Full Review

The Last Airbender is a bad film ... But I don’t think this is an absolutely terrible catastrophe of a film or even a disrespectful adaptation. Go to Full Review

The Last Airbender plays like it should be the work of a low-grade hack with little-to-no experience behind the camera, but instead, it’s by a director who not so long ago was praised as one of today’s finest new storytellers. Go to Full Review

Enrique R @EnriqueRamosLovesMovies Jan 19 The Last Airbender, one of the worst blockbusters of the 2010s and a mess. M. Night Shyamalan is a great director cause the man made The Sixth Sense and Signs and other great films, but this didn’t work. The CGI is trash. This movie is a stinker. Overall, I give this film a 1.2/10 or 1.2/5 stars. See more DanTheMan 2 Jan 12 I guess we know which Avatar was the one without any cultural impact. See more Donavin D @Hiyromedia Jan 9 Not too often that I have very little to say about something but this film left less of an impact than most. I was bored from start to finish with this film that meant to adapt a franchise I really enjoy and has a special place in my heart. The closet thing I can compare it to, though it isn’t quite as bad, is Dragon Ball evolution, for bringing the same level of effort and care for the source material. There isn’t a scene, a moment, a set piece or an aspect of the original show that shines as something special or worth while. The element bending is lazy and unspectacular. The story, which meant to mimic the structure of the shows seasons, felt incredibly incomplete and dispassionate. A film that took me several tries to finishing watching as almost every attempt to do so ended in an eye roll. Skip this one and watch the animated show and change your life for the better. See more Noah H @Noah85 Dec 31 Just watched it and yup, it's pretty bad. My biggest complaint was that there was no chemistry between Sokka and Pincess Yue in this version. The Netflix Live-action series and the original cartoon did it SOOOO much better. It had good set designs and action choreography but I'm sorry, M. Night Shyamalan. In order to make a good adaptation you have to know the source material.
