Critics Consensus

Enthusiastic and silly, Lucy powers through the movie's logic gaps with cheesy thrills plus Scarlett Johansson's charm -- and mostly succeeds at it.

It's a film that takes great delight in her essentially co-opting a long series of tropes and storylines typically reserved for men in stories of this type, which is an old trope in the feminist action movie wheelhouse. Go to Full Review

let it grab you by the noodle and zap you into its whacked-out vision of human existence. You'll feel much better for it, I promise. Go to Full Review

Say what you will about 'Lucy,' which is an absurdly silly and sometimes aggressively stupid movie, but it's at least interested in showing us something new. Go to Full Review

It's basically a fantasy wrapped in the guise of science and used as an excuse for an action thriller, but what a thriller. This is a kinetic explosion at its best with Johansson striding through it with a sense of drive and assuredness... Go to Full Review

Lucy‘s two strands co-exist, intercut but separate; the pleasure is in ricocheting between two incompatible elements for an entire movie, making those blunt opening juxtapositions surprisingly indicative of what’s to come. Go to Full Review

See more Garrett J @Garjen 3d I like sci-fi but this movie missed the mark. See more Richard P @SonicBudgie 3d Some of these reviews are funny. I remember speaking to someone about Blair Witch, and they said they didn't like it when they found out that it wasn't real! It's the same with this, it's 90 minutes or so of gun slinging, telekinetic nonsense. I'm quite sure the director and cast didn't set out to change the world or re-write human history. Sit back, switch off your brain, and watch it for the sake of some OTT entertainment, and to the naysayers, do lighten up a little! Aside from the 10% brain premise of this film, there are two things I genuinely do not like about this film (the rest is fun, interesting, enjoyable). First, when Lucy calls her mom, she should be intelligent enough to know what she’s saying has to weird her mom out, and it does, and the writer gave us the contrivance of "you’re dropping out", however the goal is not to convey info to her mom, it’s to convey info to us, the audience, about how deep she’s going; feels weak. Second, when Lucy gets hyper-smart, her neck gets this robotic quality, her gaze too; she’s not a Terminator, Luc. Rewatch? Probably, this viewing was likely my fifth. Recommend? Yes. 7/10.
