It too often mistakes shock value for real humor, but MacGruber is better than many SNL films -- and better than it probably should be.

Will Forte brings his Saturday Night Live character MacGruber to the screen with this action comedy directed by Jorma Taccone. After bad guys killed his wife (Maya Rudolph), soldier of fortune MacGruber (Forte) devoted his life to peace. But when his old nemesis (Val Kilmer) gets control of a nuclear weapon, MacGruber's former boss (Powers Boothe) convinces him to risk life and limb one more time with the help of a new team (Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe). ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

A film that poses a philosophical question fundamental to our inquiry here, namely: "Why does this exist?"

You need a great character to make a bad thing good, and the action comedy MacGruber is sadly short on great characters.

While it would be unfair to saddle MacGruber with the "worst SNL movie of all-time" moniker (I can think of at least two that are more painful to endure), its place on the vaunted 2010 Worst 10 list is assured.

MacGruber is by no means a work of genius, or a piece of art, or even very good. But Forte and company have managed to make crude and lewd dunderheadedness laugh-out-loud funny here and there, and that, I guess, is something of an achievement.

"MacGruber" is an absolute waste of time and easily the worst movie of 2010.

It's not just him badly defusing bombs over and over. It's much stupider (and smarter) than that.

My advice? Wear gloves, a surgical mask, and get the proper inoculations before entering the theatre. It's the first sexually transmitted comedy of the year.

Forte is likeable as the renegade good guy but the humour relies too heavily on blatantly telegraphed sight gags and villains with rude-sounding names.

Audience Reviews for MacGruber

MacGruber isn't very funny but it does have a couple of laugh out loud moments. It's good that it doesn't milk these laugh out loud moments by repeating them but unfortunately it does with all the crap jokes. It's been done before and it has been done better (never brilliantly, but better). I think with tinkering it could have worked well but there were some big egos involved. It should have veered away from the smutty and crass stuff too and just concentrated on the action spoof idea.

It's one joke, stretched over 90 minutes... I don't know that anyone expected this to be good, or really, what the purpose of writing a review about it would be. What you see is what you get: a series of decent gags, the occasional one hilarious, strung together lazily with something resembling a plot, in which MacGruber has to overcome his baggage and his incompetence in order to take down the villain, Dieter Cunth - great name - played by Val Kilmer, who is still alive, I guess... and to his credit, can still act decently. Kristen Wiig is always funny, and Ryan Phillippe is quite good as the straight man, too, but as most would anticipate, there's not much here. A forgettable indulgence.
