Critics Consensus

Despite an effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals, Mortal Kombat suffers from its poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.

Let's just say that Mortal Kombat is "way cool" (something I am rarely inclined to do) and leave it at that. Go to Full Review

The result has a pleasing, unpretentious B-movie verve, putting a new sheen on the old-time Saturday-matinee serial. Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat isn't the worst movie of the year, but it's easily the most forgettable. Go to Full Review

It’s two hours of impressive martial arts, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s exceptional performance as Shang Tsung, and the head-bumping riff of Techno Syndrome. Go to Full Review

This picture is based on a best-selling video game, though I could believe that it was inspired by Jayne Austin's novel "Sententiousness and Insensitivity." Go to Full Review

Mortal Kombat is probably the best film ever derived from a video game, but that's a pretty small pea patch of which to be the prince. Go to Full Review

Eric Jul 20, 2024 My theater played the wrong movie. The 2021 version was shown. See more Ben W Sep 15, 2023 Super fun and cheesy! Great time! See more Paul S @PManRager 3 hrs ago While I think the 2021 Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II are far better than this, I still enjoyed watching it. From its horrendous acting and line deliveries to its mediocre visuals, there are definitely a lot of problems with this movie, not to mention that some of the characters were far from their in-game counterparts. However, there were so many awesome fighting sequences, and this movie's beautiful campiness made it so enjoyable and captivating to watch. I definitely recommend this for action, combat, and fantasy fans, and of course for fans of the Mortal Kombat video games! See more Richard L @KaneLives Oct 18, 2026 Unlike the phenomenal soundtrack, the film itself unfortunately does not hold up. Little more than a series of fights with zero emotional stakes and half a scribbled A4 of narrative connecting them, this PG MK isn't even worth watching for the camp factor. Love the "Yeah! Goro!" guys though. See more Gareth V @geewah Oct 13, 2026 Strip away the nostalgia and you’re left with a clumsy, half-hearted adaptation that sanded off everything that made the game memorable. This is a truly bad movie. See more Devin L @RT59174311 Aug 28, 2026 Classic mortal kombat is awesome. See more Read all reviews
