Los Angeles denizen Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) survives by scavenging and petty theft. Nightcrawler, on its surface, is a relatively straightforward thriller, built around a slightly improbable but very effective main character, a man who starts as an antihero and plunges straight ahead toward villainy.

How this movie made me feel in one word: Uneasy. Is Jake Gyllenhaal an actual sociopath? He crushes this role, almost too realistically. There are countless scenes that made me feel icky (dinner date, home invasion, etc.), and it's all because of his stellar performance. His shifts in tone, his eye contact, his mannerisms, everything is just so bothersome. I was captivated by this film. It was like seeing a dead animal on the side of the road. I didn't want to watch, but I couldn't look away. One of the best singular performances I have ever seen. Best Character: Lou Bloom Best Quote: "What if my problem wasn't that I don't understand people but that I don't like them?" - Lou Best Scene: Home Invasion News Segment Best Piece of Score: "Nightcrawler" Watch filtered on VidAngel

The way Lou Bloom was created is brilliant. People define it as “a well educated sociopath.” The plot could have been a faster pace but the way this story is portrayed is phenomenal.

so atmosphere movie. This film is also an example of a real and interesting story. perhaps Jake's only role of this kind. 2010’s night LA vibe is incredible.

Once again Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't disappoint. He delivers a chilling performance as Louis Bloom. I found the concept to be brilliant. The film isn't boring for one second. It shows how money can make people do horrible things. How invasive that line of work is. Throughout the movie we see how Lou progressively dances impossibly close to the line of no return. However, it is still shocking when he puts his cameraman Rick in harms way, resulting in his death, which he seems completely unfazed by. Shocking that Jake didn't win an Oscar for this role, but I suppose that's the norm for the Oscar's. This really is a must watch for anyone who likes thrillers and is intrigued by the idea of a crime journalist going too far.
