Story and visuals both very dark - the dark picture was welcome during several episodes of violence. The adults don't have much backstory, but since we are seeing most of this through the eyes of a child, that is appropriate. It was interesting that, although I don't really speak Spanish, by the end scenes I had stopped noticing the subtitles and was hearing the English in my mind as though it was spoken. Guillermo del Toro creates a dark, beautiful fantasy that feels both magical and tragic at the same time. The atmosphere is incredible, the visuals are haunting, and the story keeps you completely engaged from beginning to end. What makes it stand out most is how it blends fairy tale elements with the harsh reality of war, giving the film so much emotional depth. The performances are strong, especially from Ivana Baquero and Sergi López, and the creatures and set design are unforgettable. It is one of those movies that stays with you long after it ends.
