Premium Rush (2012)

Critic Consensus: It's built out of familiar parts, but no matter how formulaic Premium Rush's storyline might seem, it's elevated by high-octane action and enjoyable performances.

Movie Info

Dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies, open doors, and eight million cranky pedestrians is all in a day's work for Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the best of New York's agile and aggressive bicycle messengers. It takes a special breed to ride the fixie - super lightweight, single-gear bikes with no brakes and riders who are equal part skilled cyclists and suicidal nutcases who risk becoming a smear on the pavement every time they head into traffic. But a guy who's used to putting his life on the line is about to get more than even he is used to when a routine delivery turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan. When Wilee picks up his last envelope of the day on a premium rush run, he discovers this package is different. This time, someone is actually trying to kill him. -- (C) Sonymore

Just a few spokes short of a wheel, guys.

An unpretentious throwback to the kind of action movie that had no need of superheroes, Premium Rush is hardly a classic but fun up to a point.

Premium Rush is that rare bird: a chase picture that's just a chase picture - and a dandy one.

It's a tight little thriller, briskly told. And I'm already having a hard time remembering anything else about It.

Satisfying on a basic, fun level, but also stylishly produced and not insulting to the viewer's intelligence.

The movie, idiotic as it is, has its charms, thanks in large part to its two main actors.

Audience Reviews for Premium Rush

This is a solid and fresh movie. It has cool action sequences and a nice story. The casting, other than Gordon-Levitt, is a bit questionable but the fast paced action, interesting story, humor and great narrative come together to form a good movie.

Now this is how to make an action flick! A small one, mind you, but it's one of the most fun pictures to come out. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a bicycle messenger in Manhattan who lands the unfortunate job of delivering a small slip of paper worth a ton of money. Corrupt cop Michael Shannon, trying to pay off a Chinatown gambling debt, gets wind of the item and attempts to relieve JGL of it. Unfortunately for Shannon, JGL is a pretty darn fast rider and great with stunts, and soon he has the help of his girlfriend (Dania Ramirez), who is also a bicycle messenger. It's just a simple chase movie, but it's perfectly edited and paced, with well-timed jumps back in time to explain the situation. The actors are all fine (I also really liked JGL's professional and romantic rival, Wole Parks), but Shannon really steals the show. This is the perfect place for his style of menace. Well worth your time. 5 Stars 7-21-13

I don't know why, but this movie comes across as Limitless with bikes to me. I don't it's just strange. Except, I actually liked Limitless. Premium Rush was truly dead on delivery. The corny dialogue and this-would-have-been-a-good-movie-in-2004-or-2005 style is... strange. Michael Shannon's terrible acting is just an anomaly. Overall: Premium Rush is fast paced boredom. I'm a JGL fan, but this just doesn't cut it, man. Letter Grade: D+
