Boaz Yakin (a Sundance winner for Fresh) wrote and directed this drama, set in Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish community, about a young woman who harbors doubts about continuing to follow the path of her religion. Sonia (Renee Zellweger) gives birth to her first child. She wants to name the boy after her dead brother, but after an argument over the name, she resentfully defers to her husband, scholarly zaddik (holy man) Mendel (Glenn Fitzgerald). Both are apprehensive over the child's circumcision.

A Price Above Rubies isn't a particularly good movie, though Zellweger shines in a tough, gritty role that foreshadowed her more serious acting ambitions.
Yakin's argument is presented with such blind rage and fury that his little film goes from sensitive and perceptive to sensational and scandal-mongering very quickly
Yakin dares to not only enter that neighborhood, but to find beauty and sadness in it, rather than something alien or foreign.
Thanks to Boaz (Fresh) Yorkin, we now have Bye, Bye, Hasid or better yet Escape from the Tefillin.
Writer and director Boaz Yakin has fashioned a beguiling drama about the deep yearning we all have to express our heart's desire. The film's title is from Proverbs 31:10.
Renee Zellweger, previously best known as the sweet mom from 'Jerry Maguire,' delivers a quietly stunning performance in the lead.
With its coldly antiseptic tone, the movie seems more interested in preaching awkwardly to the audience that inviting it in.
A Price Above Rubies would have more impact if filmmaker Boaz Yakin didn't allow its energy level to sag in several scenes, and if he avoided some lapses into Hollywood-style sensationalism.
