American journalist John Reed (Warren Beatty) journeys to Russia to document the Bolshevik Revolution and returns a revolutionary. His fervor for left-wing politics leads him to Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), then married, who will become a feminist icon and activist. Politics at home become more complicated as the rift grows between reality and Reed's ideals. Bryant takes up with a cynical playwright (Jack Nicholson), and Reed returns to Russia, where his health declines.

Although politically convoluted unless familiarly motivated, Beatty’s evident passion in honorably dramatizing a timeless evaluation towards a personified rebellion questioning a party’s sense of prioritizing agenda with efforts existentially questioning the self becomes a humane epic portrait at admirable length, decently focused and well performed with slight provocative effect. Forget the politic that can get you lost, the real reason this is a masterpiece of depth is the love story between John Reed and Louise Bryant. warren Beatty and Diane Keaton give outstanding, deep performances and the rest of the cast is brilliant. This is one of my favorite love stories in film history. I was swept away and cried a lot. When Diane Keaton as Louise says to John "Don't let go' I lost it. Diane let go, we will miss you!
