After Danny's mother dies, the 18-year-old boy finds himself forced to confront many adult issues. Devastated by the loss of his doting mother, he is unsure about what to do with his future: He's estranged from his stern and disapproving father (Albert Finney), a problem that's exacerbated when Danny moves in with the raffish Prunty (Anthony Brophy), a troublemaker who may be involved in more dangerous doings than Danny suspects. Danny and Prunty gad about in a series of spirited adventures, carousing in local pubs and wreaking havoc in their small hometown. Finally, Danny meets Annagh Lee (Victoria Smurfit), a beautiful young woman who lives across the border in Northern Ireland. Despite their religious differences, the two teens become involved in a tumultous and passionate affair. However, their relationship is threatened by Annagh's disapproving family, and ultimately the two young lovers must face the pain of lost innocence as they struggle to resolve deep religious and familial dilemmas. Faced with constant reminders of the military presence in his hometown, Danny must come to terms with his future in this poignant coming-of-age story, touchingly directed by Peter Yates, based on the novel by Shane Connaughton.
