Sam Stone (Danny DeVito) hates his wife, Barbara (Bette Midler), so much that he wants her dead. He's ecstatic when she's taken by a duo of kidnappers who want $500,000 ransom in exchange for her life. Fully intending to ignore every one of the kidnappers' demands in the hopes that they do him a favor and murder her for him, the two confused kidnappers (Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater) have to figure out how they're going to get their money, and what they're going to do with the overbearing Barbara.

Hilarious 80s film that wouldn’t have been near as good without Danny DeVito as the lead, a role he was perfect for. Bette Midler was also very good as ruthless and vindictive as he was. I love the crazy twists and turns and everyone getting their wires crossed and tripping over them. Pure 80s gold this one.

If you liked things like The Hangover or Miss Congeniality, then you’ll love Ruthless People. Just a genuinely hilarious script that was very natural, and had that unique gift to do random things but still have then make perfect sense. Middler, Devito, Reinhold and co made up a cast with the balance akin to 10 Things I hare About You.

Synopsis
