Critics Consensus

While not without its moments, Shrek Forever After too often feels like a rote rehashing of the franchise's earlier entries.

[Shrek Forever After] is a satisfactory way to end the series. Go to Full Review

The rot set in with the third film, I think, and now, with the fourth, it's decomposed and gone to that black sludge you get at the bottom of the bin. Go to Full Review

The movie is a family drama about the family drama, so on every available level it works a treat. Go to Full Review

Little kids will lap this up with the same zeal as Donkey digging into a stack of his beloved waffles, but adults will find nothing new here, just another retread of ideas exhausted in the previous entries. Go to Full Review

Nathan J. @NathanDirector 5d Rated: 6.5/10 ⭐️ Wrapping up my epic Shrek Day binge. Expected a tired sequel, but the alternate reality twist gave it way more heart. What Worked: • Rumpelstiltskin completely steals the show. His wild energy makes him a top-tier villain. • The Wonderful Life angle is super clever. Fierce warrior Fiona was a total blast. • The darker, grittier Far Far Away gave the animation a really fresh style for me. The Friction: • The soundtrack was a bummer. Missing the classic Eddie Murphy cover left the finale feeling incomplete. • Pampered Puss was funny briefly, but the joke got old fast. I honestly missed the hero! • Shrek’s mid-life crisis felt repetitive. His grumbling made it hard to sympathize at first. Verdict: Watch for an emotional wrap-up. Skip if you have franchise fatigue. See more Javier M @RT32457413 May 10 This film not only redeemed the franchise, but it also ended it on a higher note than the first or second one ever did. It’s getting all the criticism because of SHREK THE THIRD. IT’S SHREK THE THIRD’S FAULT. It shouldn’t even be canon. Sure, it’s less funny, but that doesn’t take away the emotional charm, because that’s the point. I know it’s more well known for its sense of comedy, but that’s not always the case for the Shrek movies. Shrek the third made this franchise take a huge step backwards, and thus Shrek 4 is thought of as a mediocre or even bad conclusion. Am I the only one who thinks this movie is underrated? And the animation’s been the best I’ve seen in a Shrek movie, and right now, I think it might be better for Shrek 5. See more Armando B @Knightowl_1991 May 2 This fourth and final installment of the " Shrek " films was well made. Not quite as good as the previous movies, but I enjoyed it all the same. There were a few moments where I laughed pretty hard. A good ending movie for the series. As that being said for this being a great finale to the chapter, I give " Shrek Forever After " a C.
