Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), the reigning junior middleweight boxing champion, has an impressive career, a loving wife and daughter, and a lavish lifestyle. However, when tragedy strikes, Billy hits rock bottom, losing his family, his house and his manager. He soon finds an unlikely savior in Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a former fighter who trains the city's toughest amateur boxers. With his future on the line, Hope fights to reclaim the trust of those he loves the most.

Southpaw uses the world of boxing as an excuse to talk about different adversities in life, especially around emotional ties. Therefore each fight and each blow contains a meaning in itself, and with each of them the boxer will give a part of his life.

Southpaw is a powerful story about redemption and rebuilding your life after hitting rock bottom. As expected, Jake Gyllenhaal delivers another phenomenal performance and is easily the movie’s standout. The supporting cast is strong too, especially Forest Whitaker. The boxing scenes are also visceral and hard-hitting—some of the best I’ve seen on screen. That being said, it is a fairly generic and sometimes predictable underdog, rags-to-riches boxing story that definitely falls back on some genre clichés at times. Still, it’s undeniably a powerful film that’s anchored by Gyllenhaal’s performance.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives one of his best performances in this movie. 50 Cent himself might just have given his best acting performance as well. While the movie is fine Jake Gyllenhaal is definitely the heart of the film and this movie would not work without him.

Buon dramma sul pugilato che, nonostante soffra l'assenza di una storia vera rispetto ai film promossi negli ultimi anni per il genere, riesce a portare a casa un risultato positivo soprattutto grazie al suo protagonista, come sempre immenso Jake Gyllenhaal e qualche sequenza molto interessante. Nello specifico, sono senza dubbio i momenti intorno al ring, che riescono a cogliere la vera essenza dello sport, tra spogliatoi e bordo ring; alcuni passaggi sono molto potenti emotivamente. Discrete le sequenze di boxe, non indimenticabili, così come tutto il resto della trama non porta con sè grandi spunti. Decisamente di valore la colonna sonora promossa da Eminem.

What a performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is well directed by Antoine Fuqua, yet so predictable but able to keep a watcher up his feet due to the emotional impact in it.
