Critics Consensus

Man of Steel's exhilarating action and spectacle can't fully overcome its detours into generic blockbuster territory.

Snyder is an adrenaline junkie forever jonesing for a fix; he does less building to the action beats than backing each one into the next. Go to Full Review

Clark's multiple father-and-son tales are beautifully realized and it's a very fun movie to watch. However, the romance is shallow. Go to Full Review

A gritty, realistic story shot by a director whose instincts constantly push him away from grit and realism, and into flash and fantasy. Go to Full Review

The film’s first half feels like a highlight reel of set pieces from Clark’s youth...and the second...is a relentless barrage of...oversized action that doesn’t even look good, with about 20 minutes of plot stuck in the middle. Go to Full Review

Snyder takes care to preserve the core of nobility, humility and goodness that have made Superman so beloved all over the world for three quarters of a century (and counting), making for a film that's exhilarating, emotional, and even beautiful. Go to Full Review

mah4283 12/09/2024 the movie was great but I hate the subtitle machine we need the glasses back not that cup holder thing See more David H @RT57478199 39m This film is the best Superman film since Superman The Movie. Christopher Reeve made me believe a man could fly and Henry Cavill made me believe that man returned. We get a fresh origin story with MOS. Standout performances by Cavill, Russel Crowe, Michael Shannon, and Kevin Costner. Zack Snyder shoots a beautiful film. The cinematography and score are top notch. Do yourselves a favor and see a Superhero film that is worth the watch. See more Karl R @RT08178329 2h One of the best Superman movies of all time. The cast. The music, even down to the suit. Henry Cavill nailed the character. Why this movie never got a sequel is possibly the worst decision ever made by Hollywood and they’ve made a LOT since. Henry Cavills superman is exactly how superman should be portrayed. The new superman literally made a mockery of the character from start to finish. You imagine Reeves’ or Cavills superman literally slapping those characters. Certainly not wanting ANYTHING to do with any of them. If you recognize what Superman should represent stick to Reeves,Routh,Welling and Cavill. Yes even Routh and Welling nailed it FAR FAR better than the new movie. Not the actors fault it’s the fault of Hollywood that clearly wanted to make superman a weak pathetic emotional man who’s reliant from start to finish both physically and emotionally on crypto a dog and Louis. (Exactly as they did to Thor) All superman fans stick to Man of Steel. Brilliant See more SidJ A @RT02356699 2d Great casting, honestly. Writing? Not so much. Why am I watching a Superman movie that is dark and too brooding. That's supposedly Batman's thing. His emblem means "Hope" but he doesn't even give that energy. Henry could've been the best Superman if he was paired with the right director with right vision. See more G M @RT44631607 3d The Superman film of our time & a benchmark for comic book movies. Framed by groundbreaking visuals and a story that updates the comics while remaining true to how its original creators envisioned this character as an outsider. I wasn't sold on this movie when I first saw it but boy has time proved how much it grows on you. An achievement in filmmaking. See more Sanat D @RT96083459 3d Now this is peak superman. Zack snyder nailed it. The definitive superman movie out there. See more Read all reviews
