It's rated PG-13, as was its predecessor, but it's full of gore and pain and trauma...A worthy finale.

Audience Reviews for The Dark Knight Returns: Part Two

A faithful adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel in all it's sheer epic brutality. An exhilarating conclusion.

*Marking this with a spoiler alert as I talk about some of the plot and the problems I had with it.*

They certainly saved most of the good stuff for Part 2. The pacing is way better, especially during the first 40 minutes which happen to be some of the best animated Batman fare I've ever seen. Unfortunately, there's the other 30 minutes that, while not terrible by any means, just feel out of place. Adding in Superman, the President, and the Cold War to the story makes it feel like two entirely different stories that happen to be going on one after the other. I absolutely loved the story with The Joker, but the face-off between Superman & Batman at the end just seems to be for the fanboys who argue who would beat who. The fact that the only reason they even fight is because Superman can't think for himself and just does whatever the government tells him to do is exactly why I've never cared for the character and why I think Batman is superior. The Cold War bits are also outdated, much like they were in Watchmen (written by Frank Miller in the 80's along with this). Other than the stories not mixing well, this is well done animated fare regardless. It's bloody, incredibly violent, and even pulpy at times. This is Batman for the mature rated crowd and certainly is the darkest Batman film I've ever seen. Some of the shots you can clearly tell that they were lifted straight from the graphic novel because they are kind of odd, but effective regardless. Part 1had pacing issues and a story that was all set-up, and while Part 2 has its fair share of problems, they are worth watching for Batman fans.

    1. Bruce Wayne/Batman: He'll still be weak, between the nuke and so little sunlight. Just how weak we'll see when he finds my first surprise.
    2. Robin: Yeah, but how long you expect to last against him?
    3. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Long enough.
    4. Robin: Boss. I'm trying to get the plan here. I mean, you gonna die tonight or what?
    5. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Figure I will.

    1. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Ever ride a horse before?
    2. Robin: Don't think I've ever seen a horse before.
    3. Bruce Wayne/Batman: You're about to learn fast.

    1. Bruce Wayne/Batman: You say you answer to some sort of authority. They only want me dead because I'm an embarrassment. Because I do what they can't. What kind of authority is that? Superman: It doesn't matter. It's their world, and they won't stand for you anymore. If it isn't me, it'll just be someone else.
    2. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Really? Who do they send after you?

    1. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Tonight I am going to maintain order in Gotham City. You are going to help me. But not with these. These are loud and clumsy. These are the weapons of cowards. Our weapons are precise and quiet. In time I will teach them to you. But for tonight, you will rely on your brains and your fists. Tonight, we are the law. Tonight, I am the law.

    1. Robin: How do you fight someone like that?
    2. Bruce Wayne/Batman: Simpler than I've made it. There's nothing wrong with Joker that I can't fix. With my hands.

    1. The Joker: Make me! Come on! Finish me! Ah, doesn't matter. I win. I made you lose control. Heh-heh-ha, and they'll kill you for it. Eh-heh-heh! See you in hell! Ah-ha-ha-ha!
