When married couple Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) unexpectedly encounter Gordo (Joel Edgerton), an acquaintance from Simon's past, little do they know that their perfect lives will be thrown into a terrifying tailspin. At first, Simon doesn't recognize Gordo, but after a troubling series of uninvited encounters and mysterious gifts, a horrifying secret emerges. Wholly calculated and far smarter than its slasher flick marketing, "The Gift" exudes a slow boiling creepiness that, for the most part, doesn't jump the shark or digress into that aforementioned gutter of cheese.

It may play as a standard stalker film in the beginning, it slowly evolves into something else. It’s sad, disturbing, and a fairly unpredictable film. The ending is abrupt, but it allows the viewer to make their own conclusion — which I quite liked.

Simon runs into an old high school friend after buying a house with his pregnant wife. This feels like a spinoff of the bully Jason Bateman was in Central Intelligence.

The Gift is a delightfully dark thriller carried by strong performances from its interesting and multi-layered characters. Its plot is as mysterious as a Christmas gift wrapped underneath the tree, with plenty of subtle twists and turns as the movie unfolds.

Synopsis
