Movie Info

Top Cat: The Movie welcomes the return of the lovable characters from the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Top Cat, along with his gang of city-slickin' fast-talking friends and their alley shenanigans -- Benny the Ball, Fancy Fancy, Choo Choo, Spook and Brains -- have to face a new sheriff. Police Chief Strickland has the latest technology and plans to keep peace with it -- his robot police force. He and his robots are raining on the alley cats' parade and as a result, the gang is forced to ban together to make sure Strickland doesn't cash in on one of their nine lives. Can the gang scratch their way back to freedom against the new robotic police force? -- (C) Virtigo Filmsmore

No child or parent deserves to be subjected to something so effortless and cynical. Top Cat: The Movie is a rarity; an almost completely mirthless, charmless animated film.

What Culture

Provides a handful of decent laughs, though some of the jokes are a bit dodgy, the 3D effects are entirely superfluous and younger children might be a little bored.

ViewLondon

What really raises the hackles are its tatty attempts to update the character to a modern New York filled with mobile phones, surveillance cameras and robot cops.

Adults looking for undemanding fare for their kids may find Top Cat's brand of sass, irreverence and cheeky charm offer a persuasive alternative to today's crasser children's entertainments.
