The performances all around are great, and I love seeing Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson share the screen. See more James J Nov 26 Aesthetically and cinematically, this movie is basically just a copy and paste of The Sixth Sense, but instead of a somewhat clever and creepy ghost story, it's a poorly written superhero movie with a dumb, rushed, and unmotivated twist. The slow, brooding aesthetic worked for The Sixth Sense because of the nature of the genre (horror), but for a superhero movie, it doesn't work at all and a great deal of this movie is just watching Bruce Willis sulk and mope while the plot barely inches along. The acting was excellent in my opinion, and I was impressed with the originality and uniqueness for a concept that has been done so often, the superhero movie. The first two acts were fantastic. However, the third act, where we finally see David as a hero, is a bit dry and definitely detracts from the film at large. The 10 minute sequence of David breaking into the house, following the man, and then strangling him sum up to 10 straight minutes with no dialogue, and a poorly choreographed fight. There was also a questionable shot as David is thrown into the pool. But I’m carrying on too much of the negatives here, the beginning and middle acts were very good. Bruce Willis sells his character and his relationship with his son and wife very well, and the movie did feel well written. It was well put together, and altogether an enjoyable experience, even if it had a slightly unsatisfying ending. The main issue I take with the ending, just to briefly sidetrack, is that although Elijah is revealed as the big bad, none of those things he did were during the movie, except of course the initial train crash, letting us feel the impact of his cruelty less. Had we known Elijah as he was committing terrorism it might’ve hit harder, although it does still hit pretty hard so this is a minor complaint. See more Read all reviews
