WE ARE THE BEST! is Moodysson's adaptation of his wife Coco's graphic novel about three young misfits growing up in early '80s Stockholm. Pixieish, mohawk-sporting Klara (Mira Grosin) and her best friend Bobo (Mira Barkhammar) are 13-year-old rebels looking for a cause. Despite having no instruments-or discernible musical talent-the two put all their energy into forming an all-girl punk band, recruiting their shy, classical guitar-playing schoolmate Hedvig (Liv LeMoyne) as the third wheel. With tender affection for his young characters and the period in which his film is set, Moodysson paints an ebullient and sharply observant portrait of DIY spirit and growing up different. The reason why many people won't watch this film is because it's a foreign film - no English. I'll be honest, I'm not one to plop in a foreign film all the time but in my personal experience, I've always enjoyed them. I also hate subtitles, but I'm very comfortable with them if need be. To add onto that, this is a pretty great film! "We Are the Best" is a coming of age story with some really nice, relatable moments. First off, we have three really great performances here. It is nowhere easy to get a convincing performance out of a kid, let alone three. These young actresses put on some really convincing and killer performances. They reminded us how a kid thinks, acts, talks, and all the life struggles they face. We all remember those, how can we not? The writing was really simple yet really effective. We're thrown into a setting where this world is real. It feels real, it feels natural, and it feels relatable. I think that the writing was really well done and it really made this film what it was. The story was cohesive and nothing "big" ever had to push this film over the edge. Don't need to say too much about it. It's a simple and fun film with elements of a feel good story in it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to watch it, even if you don't watch foreign films often. See more nefasto r @Nefasto 11/29/2018 I do not know what all the fuss is about honestly. Under a really thin layer of cuteness, you will find basically nothing. At least nothing new. Some 80s nostalgia is not enough to make this movie, a good movie. If anything, it reminded me of some overlong episode of some 80s series, and not for any of the good reasons either. Punk is dead indeed. See more 01/29/2018 Extremely amiable lead performances from the central trio of girls lift this film miles above what is there on the page. It's only ever amusing, moving or really interesting at various stages but they are so captivating that I found myself enjoying the film more than I probably should have. Mostly forgettable though you feel in the long term. See more 03/30/2017 We Are the Best was definitely different. I guess I expected more music or some sign that they were improving, but this film was more focused on the friendships. I liked the characters, and particularly liked the dynamic shift when Hedvig joined. I honestly didn't realize it was a foreign language film when I started, so that threw me for a loop. And I've discovered, for all the issues that I have with reading subtitles, that is magnified by a factor of a thousand when it comes to reading subtitles to songs. The English lyrics often don't flow with the music so I struggle to even read them while the music is playing. The girls they brought in for this film were very natural. It never felt like acting, almost as if the director just gave them a general outline of the scene and let them talk normal to each other. I also thought they had an interesting look with the punk haircuts and masculine clothes. I'll admit, I didn't know Bobo was a girl until someone said it aloud. We Are the Best was not a bad teen drama with a sprinkling of comedic moments. I cared about the characters and rooted for them along the way. The ups-and-downs of their friendships was totally engaging. I just wanted there to be a bit more focus on the music or something, and not the same 2 songs over and over again. The movie is not exactly my cup of tea, but it's well made. See more Read all reviews
