Terry Gannon Jr. was an All-Star softball player until a few curve balls -- a baby, a lost scholarship and a loser husband -- changed everything. After striking out on her own, Terry and her son, Danny, move in with her estranged father: an opinionated, beer-guzzling, former athlete named Terry "The Cannon" Gannon Sr. Despite Terry's desire to keep her son away from the sports-driven lifestyle she had, Danny wants to play Little League. When Danny and several other sports-challenged kids fail to make the team, a wealthy neighbor finances one for the misfits -- a team that Terry reluctantly offers to coach.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

James Caan is appealing as an arrogant ex-jock, but Back in the Game is full of stale jokes and crude humor that isn't very family friendly.

We'd all prefer originality, but in this case, at least, what's been borrowed is less important than what the show has made of it. Go to Full Review

I'm not saying every comedy needs to reinvent the wheel but the treads are too worn on this one. Go to Full Review

Little League isn't the most common of sitcom subjects, but Back In The Game still mines from a bunch of established tropes. Go to Full Review

[T]hat's all there is to Back In the Game, a show where people being terrible to each other and refusing to grow personally is supposed to make me laugh. No thanks. Go to Full Review

Unless they pick up the pace of the writing and stretch themselves, Back in the Game could easily find itself on the early chopping block. Go to Full Review

A show that includes crude lines about dad passing gas and pulling out his junk and has 10-year-olds saying things adults hope is too advanced for their age ends up being sweet but still strikes out as a comedy. Go to Full Review
