Series 1 opens in 1957 with young nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine), who hails from the wealthy English countryside, discovering that her first placement is not the private hospital she'd expected, but Nonnatus House, a clinic run by an order of nursing nuns in London's impoverished East End. Among the patients she helps: a woman on her 25th pregnancy, a 15-year-old prostitute and an elderly soldier suffering from leg ulcers. It was... all as sweet as the cake Parfitt's Sister Monica Joan kept scoffing before the others could eat it; and I suspect it will be equally addictive. Miranda Hart arrives next week; I fear I will be watching.
