A sign of the apocalypse has begun. Reports of a rapidly changing world for unknown reasons underscore this gritty drama, a prequel to AMC's uber-popular "Walking Dead." The story is told through the lens of high school guidance counselor Madison Clark. The widowed mother is raising two children single-handedly and maintains a relationship with English teacher Travis Manawa, her apocalyptic partner. The challenge of blending their families is exacerbated by unforeseen chaos, and a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fear the Walking Dead recycles elements of its predecessor, but it's still moody and engrossing enough to compete with the original.

In truth, Fear the Walking Dead is actually rather excellent, though the jury may still be out on some of the arcs of its longer-term storytelling. Go to Full Review

Fear the Walking Dead shows in spectacular detail the painful emotional process ordinary people go through when a loved one is infected by the zombie bug. Go to Full Review

It feels like writers are trying so hard to humanize these characters, they're forgetting their audience. Society is breaking down and people are being eaten; however, it doesn't seem to be impacting this series. Go to Full Review

Fear The Walking Dead has a solid start that encourages you to keep an eye on the story. AMC knows how to exploit the zombie hen for the golden eggs. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

For the most part, Fear the Walking Dead aims to pick up something the mothership lost along the way, specifically an existential horror behind all the gore. Go to Full Review

Brett L. @Bomb2Moss Dec 27 It’s somewhat interesting to see the start of the infection spread and the choices made by the government, military, and everyday people but it’s just not the caliber of show that the original series was. It’s held back by so so writing and story telling and weak casting, acting, and characters. They fail to truly pay off the most interesting character plot line involving Nick. The story just isn’t that compelling. The lack of compelling characters also makes what could be profound moments turn into shoulder shrugging ones. There’s not a series carrying Rick or Daryl present to guide us through the West Coast’s Walking Dead world. Nick and Strand are solid characters but are surrounded by not so great characters that are incredibly annoying in their boringness. I get they wanted to go in a different direction with the series but compelling characters are essential to any series and season 1 completely fails to deliver a solid group of them. Overall, it’s just OK and not up to the standard set by the original series. You can tell AMC probably wasn’t satisfied with the series post filming and likely chopped it down to 6 episodes as a result. Exiting season 1 you’re just left with a strong feeling that they’ll need to do a massive overhaul if the series is to ever be anything close to the original series. I wanted to love this after recently going on a return binge of the original series but it’s just an average series that falls short in countless areas that are quintessential to the Walking Dead ecosystem. If you want the best Walking Dead spin off, watch “The Ones Who Live” instead. See more Red D Oct 31 The characters are alright, the pacing is slow, but it does a good job of building tension and confusion around the start of the outbreak. See more Patrick G @TrishFritz Oct 12 A decent introduction to the characters and an cool perspective of the early days of the outbreak. Some pacing issues and phoned in acting. Looking forward to how it goes though in later seasons. See more Phil H Aug 30 Within the genre of zombie fiction this is one of the better depictions of the start of the zompocalypse, arguably the most interesting phase. If you like zombie horror, you'll like this.
