Season Info

A musical comedy-drama about the social outcasts who make up the glee club at McKinley High School. In the first season, Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) starts the club and protects it from the malevolent schemes of diabolical cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), all the while dealing with a troubled marriage and a mutual attraction to McKinley's quirky guidance counsellor (Jayma Mays). The club's original core members are made up of pop-superstar wannabe Rachel Berry

Network: FOX

Air date: May 19, 2009

In the pilot of this musical comedy-drama from Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) about the misfits who make up a high-school glee club, teacher and former glee-club star Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) must find a male singer to match diva Rachel (Lea Michele). Then he hears football quarterback Finn (Cory Monteith) singing in a shower. Meanwhile, Will's wife (Jessalyn Gilsig) wants him to get a better-paying job.

Air date: Sep 9, 2009

The first season opens with the club's first performance. It's not what Will expects, and it gives his rival, cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), added ammunition. But it is crowd-pleasing. Meanwhile, Finn's cheerleader girlfriend, Quinn (Dianna Agron), is becoming jealous of Rachel; and Will's wife, Terri, wants to buy a house, so Will has to scramble to earn more money.

Air date: Sep 16, 2009

Will forms an all-male a cappella group, but when he neglects the glee club, the kids decide to hire a well-known choreographer to coach them. Meanwhile, Mercedes falls in love. Josh Groban appears as himself.

Air date: Sep 23, 2009

While Kurt tries out for the football team (taking a page from the glee playbook with him), Rachel storms out of glee practice when Will gives a plum part to Tina. Meanwhile, Sue comes up with a new plot to boost her program at glee's expense; and Quinn has news for Finn.

Air date: Sep 30, 2009

The Rhodes Not Taken

Will enlists a former classmate (Kristin Chenoweth) to spice up the glee club and her efforts appear to be going well. But a key member thinks otherwise.

Air date: Oct 7, 2009

Vitamin D

Will challenges the kids to a mashup showdown, with the boys taking on the girls; Terri takes a job as school nurse to keep an eye on Will, despite the fact that she has no health-care training.

Air date: Oct 14, 2009

Sue makes the Glee kids compete against each other to sow seeds of dissension, then gets called into Principal Figgins' office, along with Will. Meanwhile, the kids rally to show their support for Quinn.

Air date: Oct 21, 2009

Will is inspired by the kids to create a mash-up for a special occasion. Meanwhile, the cool kids at McKinley High get a taste of their own medicine, and Sue displays her softer side.

Air date: Nov 11, 2009

It's Rachel vs. Kurt in a "diva-off" for the solo in Glee's rendition of "Defying Gravity." Meanwhile, the school can't pay for a wheelchair-accessible bus for Artie for the trip to regionals, so Shue challenges his charges to raise the money; Quinn's medical bills are beginning to pile up, and she challenges Finn to come up with money to pay them; and Sue must hold an open tryout for the Cheerios. Her selection has Shue scratching his head.

Air date: Nov 18, 2009

Mr. Schuester divides the glee club into couples for a ballad, but it turns out to be not so good an idea when one kid gets sick. Meanwhile, Finn has dinner with Quinn's parents (Gregg Henry and Charlotte Ross). This turns out to be a bad idea as well.

Air date: Nov 25, 2009

Will is concerned that Sue is leaking info, so he visits with a rival club's instructor (Eve) while the kids check out their competition. Meanwhile, Kurt gives Rachel a makeover, and he may have hidden motives for doing this.

Air date: Dec 2, 2009

Budget cuts mean no yearbook photo for the glee club, but Rachel is the only one upset about this. Meanwhile, Quinn tries to get into the Cheerios yearbook photo; and Will and Terri face serious problems in their relationship.

Air date: Dec 9, 2009

Quinn's secret unravels as the sectionals approach, threatening club cohesion at the worst possible time. Meanwhile, Sue's scheming continues apace (and then some); and Will ponders an important decision as Emma and Ken's wedding nears.

Air date: Apr 13, 2010

Fresh off their Sectionals win, the glee kids work on new numbers for Regionals. But club cohesion (not to mention Rachel and Finn's budding romance) is threatened when Rachel becomes involved with a competitor named Jesse (Jonathan Groff). So Will visits the competitor's coach (Idina Menzel) to try to discern Jesse's true intentions. Meanwhile, Will is single again, but that isn't necessarily good news for Emma; and Sue is back from her sojourn in Boca Raton and spoiling for a fight with Will.

Air date: Apr 20, 2010

The Power of Madonna

When the glee guys begin to bully the girls, Will turns to the music of Madonna to give the girls an ego boost and teach the boys respect. (They perform Madonna's "Express Yourself" and "Like a Prayer"). Meanwhile, Kurt and Mercedes give Sue a makeover.

Air date: Apr 27, 2010

Kurt fixes up his dad (Mike O'Malley) with a date in hopes of having a regular family; Sue demands that the Cheerios diet in preparation for a magazine interview; and April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth) returns to help Will save New Directions.

Air date: May 4, 2010

Bad Reputation

Will responds to a rumor about the glee kids that has spread around McKinley High. Meanwhile, Sue is embarrassed by a video of her performing the Olivia Newton-John song "Physical." Newton-John has a cameo as herself.

Air date: May 11, 2010

Rachel is alarmed when she gets a sore throat. Meanwhile, Kurt makes a personality adjustment to please his dad; and Puck looks to climb in social ranking by making a calculated move.

Air date: May 18, 2010

Dream On

Will's high-school rival (Neil Patrick Harris) shows up and causes trouble for the glee club. Meanwhile, Rachel struggles with a longstanding personal problem; and Artie's dream leads to an adventure.

Air date: May 25, 2010

Will tells the glee kids to express themselves through the music of Lady Gaga; Rachel has an encounter that changes her life; and Tina goes Goth.

Air date: Jun 1, 2010

The glee club gets some jarring news; Will gets revenge on Sue (for the time being); and Quinn connects with her "funky" side, with some help from Mercedes.

Air date: Jun 8, 2010

Journey to Regionals

Season 1 finale: Regionals are looming and Sue is scheming, jeopardizing the glee kids' chances once again. Meanwhile, Quinn has a life-changing event. Olivia Newton-John and Josh Groban have cameos as themselves.

Glee is starting out smartly, a promising blip in a fall season dominated otherwise by the usual reality sludge and forensic law enforcement blah-blah-blah.

They're flashy and can be briefly shocking or funny or even moving, but the more they go over-the-top, the less impact they have for me.
