Worked as a General Assistant at the Belgrade in Coventry. Performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company between 1966 and 1983, playing almost every Shakespearean king. Won Most Promising Actor at the 1969 London Theatre Critics' awards. Awarded the 1981 London Critics' Circle Best Actor Award for his performances in three plays: Good, Richard III and Forest. Appointed a CBE in 1998 for services to drama.
