Hannah Bailey entered filmdom on a most unusual note, when the Warsaw, IN, native signed on to appear as herself in Nanette Burstein's generally well-received documentary American Teen. The outing presents one year in the lives of four middle American Hoosier teens during their senior year at Warsaw Community High School. In the film, Bailey distinguishes herself from her costars as the one subject who openly espouses a longing to escape from the confines of small-town Indiana and make something of herself. She's an arty, freewheeling type, a social iconoclast (with a male best friend whom one publication referred to as "sexually ambiguous"), whose dream involves relocating to San Francisco and studying film. Bailey eventually accomplished those goals, albeit against an unexpected backdrop: she enrolled in film school at the State University of New York -- Purchase. In the meantime, she and her costars spent months exhaustively helping to promote Burstein's film.
