Suffered from long-term kidney damage after being born prematurely. Was a member of the Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club until the age of 14, where he missed out on a place in the England schools team. Auditioned for The X Factor in 2008 at the age of 14 but was eliminated before making it to the live shows; returned in 2010 as a solo artist but judges placed him into a new five-piece boy band to qualify for the Groups category, which eventually became One Direction. Sang Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" for his 2008 The X Factor audition and Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River" for his 2010 audition. Co-wrote three songs on One Direction's debut album, Up All Night, released in 2011.
