Was friends with painter Salvador Dali and poet Federico García Lorca at the University of Madrid. Attended the Académie du Cinéma in Paris. Made his directorial debut with the 1929 surrealistic short Un Chien Andalou (Dali was a cowriter) while living in Paris. First feature film, L'Âge d'Or (1930), was banned due to complaints that it was sacrilegious. Worked on film projects for Spain's Republican government in the 1930s; dubbed and edited films in France, Hollywood and the Museum of Modern Art in New York following Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. Was invited back to Spain by the Franco government in the early 1960s, but the film he made there, Viridiana (the winner of the 1961 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or), was banned because of its antifascist and antireligious sentiments. Lived mostly in Mexico from 1946 until his death, but worked often in France.
