A graduate of Brooklyn's famed Erasmus Hall (later alumnae included Barbra Streisand), Mary Anderson became a major star for the pioneering Vitagraph company. Barely 17, Anderson often starred in rough-and-tumble Westerns and often opposite Gayne Whitman. Her career in drastic decline by the late 1910s, Anderson starred in the low-budget serial The Vanishing Trails (1920) before easing into supporting roles. A different Mary Anderson (born 1921) became a prominent ingénue at Fox in the 1920s.
