Michael Robert Johnson is the principal writer of the 2009 adventure film "Sherlock Holmes." The U.K. native, a boyhood friend of "Centurion" director Neil Marshall, received his first screen credit for collaborating with Lionel Wigram on the film's story, which transformed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective into a martial-arts-practicing action hero. Johnson also penned the first version of the film's script, which was later revised by Anthony Peckham ("Invictus") and Simon Kinberg ("Mr. & Mrs. Smith"). Director Guy Ritchie, renowned for his crime comedies "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," and star Robert Downey Jr. were also involved in the screenplay in uncredited capacities. Released on Christmas Day of '09, this 21st-century update of the Holmes franchise was a box-office smash, though it fared less well with critics, who usually offered praise for the performances of Downey (Holmes) and Jude Law (Watson) but found the film to be a triumph of style over substance. Johnson also tutors aspiring screenwriters at London's Central Film School.
