Through a cruel twist of fate, American actor Sam Elliott came to films at just the point that the sort of fare in which he should have thrived was dying at the box office. A born cowboy star if ever there was one, the stage-trained Elliot made his debut in a tiny role in the 1969 western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Within a few years, the western market had disappeared, and Elliot had to settle for standard good-guy roles in such contemporary films as Lifeguard (1976). Never tied down to any one type, Elliot's range has embraced sexy "other men" (Sibling Rivalry [1989]) and vicious rapist/murderers (the TV movie A Death in California [1986]). Still, one yearned to see Elliot playing frontiersmen; fortunately, the western genre had not completely disappeared on television, and Elliot was well-served with such hard-riding projects as The Sacketts (1977), I Will Fight No More Forever (1981), The Shadow Riders (1982), Houston: The Legend of Texas (1986) and Conagher (1991), in which he appeared with his wife, actress Katherine Ross. When westerns began showing up on the big screen again in the 1990s, Elliot was there, prominently cast as Virgil Earp in Tombstone (1993) and the made-for-cable sagebrusher The Desperate Trail (1995). Awarded Bronze Wrangler trophies for his involvement in Conagher, The Hi-Lo Country, and You Know My Name, Elliot also made an impression on Cohen Brothers fans with a memorable performance as the laid back Stranger in the cult hit The Big Lebowski. A featured role in the 2000 made for television remake Fail Safe found Elliot hanging up his duster to revisit rising Cold War tensions, and later that same year he would finally make the leap into the new millennium with his role as a presidential aid in Rod Lurie's Oscar-nominated hit The Contender. Rewarded with a double hernia as a result of his intense training efforts to prepare for a role in the 2002 Vietnam War drama We Were Soldiers, the then fifty-seven-year-old endured the pain through the entire production and put of surgery until shooting had wrapped. Though Elliot would remain in the armed forces to portray a military general hell-bent on destroying the Hulk in 2003, his onscreen authority would weaken somewhat when he was cast as a cancer-riddled Marlboro Man in the 2005 comedy Thank You for Smoking. After traveling to the far corners of the globe to carry out a little vigilante justice in the 2006 made for television thriller Avenger, Elliot would next break a little new ground by venturing into the world of animation by lending his distinctive voice to the character of Ben the Cow in Steve Oedekerk's rural family romp Barnyard. He co-starred with Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in The Golden Compass (2007), a film adaptation of the first installment of the wildly successful book series from author Philip Pullman. In 2009 he took on a role in the award winning comedy drama Up in the Air, and co-starred as an eccentric billionaire in director Tony Krantz's The Big Bang in 2011. He joined Robert Redford and Julie Christie to play a supporting role in 2012's comedy drama The Company You Keep.

F-22 Pilot says: I think I can come back around for a gun attack.

General `Thunderbolt' Ross says: Acquire a clear target. Fire at will.

General `Thunderbolt' Ross says: Tango Flight, do you have eyes on the target ?

Comanche Pilot says: Tango One, I have him in the rocks.

General `Thunderbolt' Ross says: Salvo all. Turn it into a parking lot.

Comanche Pilot says: T - bolt, your parking lot is ready. We`re bingo for fuel and ammo. R.T.B.

John Riggs says: You tear apart the babies rattle, and you see what makes the noise inside. But there is a veil covering the unseen world, which not the strongest man could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love and romance, can push aside that curtain and view the beauty and the glory beyond. Is it all real? Virginia, in all this world, there is nothing else real in the body...Santa Claus, thank god he lives. And lives forever, a thousand years from now, ten times ten thousand years from now, and he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

General "Thunderbolt" Ross says: One more thing, if you ever... come within a thousand yards of my daughter again, I'll put you away for the rest of your natural life.

Wade Garrett says: You got a skinny little runt named Dalton working here?

Wade Garrett says: A man puts a gun in yer face, you got two choices - stand there 'n die or kill the motherfucker!

Wade Garrett says: I'll get all the sleep I need when I'm dead.

Wade Garrett says: The Double Douche!

Wade Garrett says: That gal's got entirely too many brains to have an ass like that.

Wade Garrett says: This place has a sign hangin' over the urinal that says, "Don't eat the big white mint".

The Stranger says: Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes, well, the bar eats you.

The Stranger says: There's just one thing, dude.

The Dude says: What's that?

The Stranger says: Do you have to use so many cuss words?

The Dude says: What the fuck you talkin' about?

Chupadogra says: Something tells me it's not to late to be the real you.

SGM Basil Plumley says: What are you, the f*cking weatherman.

Caretaker says: The thing about legends is...sometimes they're true.

Caretaker says: It's said that the West was built on legends...and that legends are a way of understanding things greater than ourselves. Forces that shape our lives. Events that defy explanation. Individuals whose lives soar to the heavens...or fall to the earth. This is how legends are born.

Caretaker says: Any man who's got the guts to sell his soul for the power to change the world.

Dag the Coyote says: Ben! How are you, Ben? We would've said hello had we seen ya.

Ben the Cow says: Put the hen down, Dag.

Dag the Coyote says: Sure, Ben. Whatever you say. We're just doin' a little courtin', that's all. You know how much we like the hens. [Chuckles evilly] You know me, lady killer.

The Stranger says: The Dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowing he's out there, the Dude, takin' 'er easy for all us sinners.

Caretaker says: You alll right?

Caretaker says: You all right?

Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider says: Yeah, I'm good. I feel lke my skull is on fire, but I'm good.

Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider says: Yeah I'm good, feels like my skull's on fire, but I'm good.

The Stranger says: Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

The Stranger says: Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes, well, he eats you.

The Stranger says: Darkness warshed over the Dude - darker'n a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night.

The Stranger says: The dude abides...

Lorne Lutch says: You look like a nice enough fella. What are you doing working for these assholes?

Nick Naylor says: I'm good at it. Better at doing this than I ever was at doing anything else.
