Began working for Thomas Edison in 1883, and between 1887 and 1891 invented the Kinetograph camera and Kinetoscope viewer, both key developments in motion picture technology. Dickson produced and directed hundreds of the short films which supplied Edison's Kinetoscope parlors, and designed the glass-built "Black Maria," considered the world's first movie studio.
