Christian M @chriss17eu Jun 5 'Dickson Experimental Sound Film', considered the first synchronized sound film in cinema history, fascinates me not only for its historical importance, but for what it conveys on a sensory level. Unlike the live musical accompaniments of early cinema, the sound here is born from the image itself. I do not know whether the audio we hear today is entirely authentic or a reconstruction, considering the film dates back to 1894 and is partially lost, but that hardly changes its impact. What matters is witnessing the birth of something enormous: the moment sound stopped being external accompaniment and became an expressive narrative tool. I am deeply drawn to the technical "dirtiness" of old media, and this rough, ghostly phonograph sound feels fragile, imperfect and impossible to replicate today. Dickson playing violin becomes the doorway to the future of cinema. See more Read all reviews
