Critic Reviews for 1917

  • As a genre piece, I think it's really interesting -- well made and immersive. But as a kind of emotional movie that really pulled me in, I don't know if it did that.

  • It's an immersive, visceral and meticulously crafted film that has the emotional stakes to match.

  • The film dazzles at each step, one encounter and adventure after another shot like a set piece, complete in itself with MacKay's stoic presence adding to the pathos and poignancy.

  • The film is thrilling, moving on effectively from one shocking set piece to another, studding the narrative too with starry cameos.

    January 14, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…
  • It's a tense, unnerving ride that accomplishes its goal of translating the first-person experience of war better than any war movies that have come before it. It's a level up.

    January 14, 2020 | Rating: A | Full Review…
  • The way in which the film is choreographed, the music is very important...the film actually stops, bringing everyone together in a quasi-religious silence...very moving and effective.

It works as a tense set piece machine but I'm not convinced there is anything more profound going on here.

An epic visual masterpiece of the often ignored (at least in this generation) horror of World War I.

Really a phenomenal achievement wherein a large scale film is based, au contraire, on a simple story: two soldiers during WW1 travel behind enemy lines to deliver a message. What's remarkable is the total immersion into the year 1917, particularly with the performances of the lead actors, conveying the thought processes of what's termed nowadays as "simpler times". Mendes has created a soaring work as well as a historical document encapsulating a different time.

There was a lot of hype surrounding this film on release, and it lives up to those expectations. Sam Mendes teams with Deakins to create a non stop thriller set in 1917. Technically speaking, this film is incredible to watch. The journey throughout the war torn country side is unsettling to watch, and those long takes pay off. 1917 always had an ambitious uphill battle, but I'm happy to say it is all worth it. The relatively unknown leads are surrounded by strong character actors in support. This is much in line with Dunkirk, with both Mendes and Nolan rising to fame in the same era. I'm happy this wasn't the best picture for 2019, I feel Parasite was the correct choice, but this is still a great film, just not an instant classic. Time will tell with this and maybe you'll find me eating my words in 10 years time. 24/03/2020
